In 2017, Matt and Vanessa Marietti brought their dream to life. Atelier de Fer, which is French for iron workshop, is a combination of the things they love – delicious food, custom-crafted drinks, good friends, and a lively and inviting space. We in Pittsburgh are fortunate to be the beneficiaries of the hard work and dedication that the Mariettis and their team have put into this burgeoning, local institution.
During their time living abroad, Matt and Vanessa Marietti fell in love with European café culture. Inspired by a desire to combine good food and drink with a welcoming gathering space, they launched Atelier de Fer at the end of 2017. Matt knew that roasting his own coffee was going to be central to his concept, so he began learning and perfecting his roasting technique in the year leading up to opening the doors to his café. Today, Matt, Vanessa, and the rest of their team operate a growing and thriving business in the heart of Pittsburgh’s Strip District. In a short time, it’s become a mainstay and favorite among foodies and coffee aficionados alike. In this episode, Matt and I discussed the origins of the concept, how he learned to roast coffee, and the role his formal education and corporate career played in how he runs the business today.
